Shiba Inu: History

shiba inu facts

According to archaeologists, the remains of the ancestors of dogs of a similar type date back to 4-3 centuries BC. Japan is considered the homeland of these dogs. It was there that the progenitors crossed Chinese dogs with Japanese to obtain the existing standard. Until the 19th century, Shiba Inu existed only in Japan, and after the isolation was removed, they got to Asia and Europe. Experienced dog handlers immediately appreciated Shiba Inu intelligence and hunting skills. At the beginning of the 20th century, the breed was at risk of extinction.

Therefore, in 1928, it was decided to take measures aimed at preserving the purity of the breed and restoring its numbers. The main selection criteria were erect triangular ears, deep-set eyes, dense two-tier hair, and a tail, which is sharply curled behind the back. After 6 years, dog handlers managed to form standards. In 1936, the breed was declared a national treasure of Japan. Then the Second World War once again threatened the existence of the breed. However, this crisis was also overcome. By the early 80s, the breed was widely spread abroad, and in 1992 it was recognized by the American associations AKC and UKC. Thick coat, unusual fox appearance, sharp mind, activity, and curiosity are not a complete list of advantages that allowed Shiba Inu to gain enviable popularity among breeders. Today, its role as a hunter has faded into the background, putting forward the role of a companion.

Shiba Inu: Characteristics

shiba inu personality

Shiba Inu is harmoniously built. In this, you can notice the endurance and massiveness of the ancestors, who had to spend many hours hunting. Representatives of the breed have strong paws of medium size, a triangular head, similar in shape and location of eyes to a fox. The tail is one of the important criteria for the Shiba Inu breed. Curled into a well-pronounced ring, set high, can reach the hock in length, covered with dense hair, rather thick.

Shiba Inu: Size

In the general characteristics, you can find the average size, but we all know that the size of a male dog is always a little larger. Males at the withers range from 14-16 inches and weigh between 19 and 30 pounds. Bitches are smaller, 13.5-15 inches tall and weighing 17 to 28 pounds. The Shiba Inu dog is well-balanced, lean, and the tail is wrapped in a ring over the back.

Shiba Inu: Color

There are three main types of color: red, zoned or sesame, black, and tan, silver, or red. The lighter areas should also be located on the inside of the legs and the lower part of the tail.

The gradation of the sesame color is interesting. there are three main directions:

  • red sesame is a mixture of red and black hair, more often red hair with a black edge;
  • black sesame;
  • black coat predominates over a few light hairs;
  • sesame: equal numbers of black and white hairs.

Too light color, sandy and white shades are considered to be a marriage of the breed. A bright red color is most desirable.

Shiba Inu: Temperament

The Shiba Inu is distinguished by a strong and willful character. The dog requires a firm hand and a confident owner. Inclined to dominate, it will constantly check whether the leader’s place is vacant and try to take it. The animal is distinguished by an average degree of activity, it is quite adapted for living in an apartment in a metropolis. However, the dog will feel most comfortable with an active owner who loves regular physical activity. The dog prefers long walks and will be an excellent companion in nature hikes. Pets are very sensitive to personal space. Are Shiba Inus good with kids? These dogs are not recommended for families with small children, because violation of the boundaries of the animal can lead to negative consequences. Gynecologists recommend bringing a dog of this breed to a house where children are over 10 years old. Due to the possessive nature of the Shiba Inu, it does not get along well with other pets, the desire to dominate, and the constant struggle for resources will lead to conflicts. According to the Shiba Inu personality, only one master is chosen, whom they obey. Physical violence is excluded, an aggressive approach negatively affects the psyche of Shiba Inu, makes the dog unbalanced and vicious. The breed is not recommended for beginners. Training an animal requires patience and experience, so it makes sense even for an experienced breeder to seek the help of a cytologist who knows how to work with this particular breed of a dog.

Shiba Inu: Care

shiba inu care

The Shiba Inu breed is distinguished by excellent health. Although dogs of this breed are not picky about food, the food must be balanced and contain all the necessary elements. Fish, seafood, rice, and seaweed are included. Wheat, corn, chicken, and beef are given with caution because these products can cause allergies. Eggs, smoked meats, chocolate, and sweets are strictly prohibited. The diet can be enriched with vegetables. These pets do not eat much, so special attention should be paid to the quality of the feed. Shiba Inu shedding is a problem of its breed. They shed evenly throughout the year. However, they shed their undercoat twice a year, which greatly intensifies shedding within about 3-4 weeks. On the other hand, they are not very difficult to maintain, so regular cleaning is usually sufficient.

Let me tell you some interesting facts about dogs of this breed:
